Tips for Producing Great Video Content

Producing quality video content for the web has never been as easy as it is today. Recording equipment and editing software is now widely available, at reasonable prices, so nearly anyone can make the jump to producing content.

Tips for Producing Great Video ContentThe phenomenal popularity of YouTube proves that web video is a great way to increase website traffic or market products directly. Many companies have gained massive exposure to millions of potential customers by uploading and sharing video content.

However, with millions of videos circulating the web, you need to produce something that's interesting, informative, or entertaining to get noticed. As with most marketing techniques, it takes persistence and a willingness to adapt to feedback.

Preparing to create video content will take more time than creating text only content. That's because video can't be edited real time, like text. If you make a mistake recording a video, you have to either:

  1. start over

    or
  2. keep going and edit out the mistake in post-production.

Think about how video can add to the content you produce and use it to its full potential. If, for example, you are making an instructional video think about how it can best be used to guide viewers.

If you plan on making an appearance in your videos, you will obviously need a digital video camera with a tripod, a microphone, and a dedicated studio or studio area. But, you don't necessarily have to start out that way. I've done many videos as simple screen captures. A software product like Camtasia allows you to record your screen and voice simultaneously.

Mastering the art of shooting and editing video isn't easy, but it can be fun. The key to successful video publishing is practice. Keep your first movies short and simple, preferably less than 5 minutes. You can publish longer and more sophisticated videos as time goes on.

Bear in mind that making videos for the web is not the same as filming for television. Your videos, after production, will more than likely be viewed on a 17-19 inch computer monitor. Most video upload sites will also limit video size and length. What's that mean? People will sit in front of a television and watch a 30 or 60 minute show. But, they probably won't sit in front of a computer screen that long. Think of your videos as just another way to get your information out in shore bite-sized snippets.

Movie editing software can be complex and it will most likely take you some time to get the most out of it. Once your movie is complete, you will want to choose your publishing form. QuickTime and Windows Media Player are the most popular and most video editors will allow you to publish in this format.

As with great web content, you should focus on delivering the same in your videos. Don't worry about fancy graphics or tricks. All said and done, most people just want the information.
