When you create a web audio file, the microphone you use is critical to getting a professional quality recording. Using the right microphone can mean the difference between sounding like you're sitting next to the listener and sounding like you're sitting across a crowded room.
Buying the right microphone can seem like a mysterious process. There are thousands of options with varying prices, some well over the $1,000 mark. But, there's no need to get wrapped up in the brand names and brand name price tags. Getting the right microphone is more a function of you. Ask yourself, what you are trying to accomplish with your recordings?
The following tips will help you sift through and select the right microphone for you.
A good web audio recording will give the listener the impression that you are in the same room. The most popular microphone, the headset style, keeps the microphone close to your mouth like a telephone and will produce much more even voice tones. Headset type microphones also do an excellent job reproducing your voice in high fidelity.
Headset microphones offer several other advantages. They're space savers. You don't have to worry about giving up desk space — as with a standalone microphone. Another benefit is flexibility. With a headset microphone, you can move around freely and not have to worry if you're too far from the microphone. This is especially beneficial for people who like to walk around while they talk. By allowing this freedom, you are more likely to use gestures that will help your voice flow more naturally.
Analog headset microphones have a wearable microphone ending with two 3.5 mm plugs. One end of the plug is for the microphone and one end of the plug is for the headphones.
For the best in affordable computer microphones, look for a stereo headset microphone with a response rate of 100 Hz to 8 kHz. You also want to make sure the microphone is not omnidirectional. A unidirectional microphone will give your recording the best quality with the least amount of background noise.
If you're not in an office or studio when recording, you'll need a dynamic microphone. Dynamic mics are sturdy, can be used in question and answer type environments, and work in virtually any recording environment — indoor or outdoor.
Getting the right microphone doesn't have to be mysterious. You probably don't need a thousand dollar microphone but you may need something better than what you can pick up at a local retailer. Shop around and test out different microphones. In the end, the best microphone to get is the one that works for you.
