Podcasting, although not new, is the latest trend for getting audio files onto the web. It’s a great option for adding quality content to your website, if you do it correctly. Of course, as with anything else, there are factors you must avoid if you want to keep people coming back to listen.
Stay on Topic
This should go without saying. Don't wander too far from your podcast’s title and topic. Amazingly, many podcasters don’t use a script. Even for shorter messages, a script can provide a well lit path down your intended message. Short anecdotes related to the content are fine but long stories unrelated will turn people off.
Wings are for Birds
Don’t try to wing your podcast, especially for anything longer than 5 minutes. Only excellent public speakers and comedians can make improvisation work. Many people fail to consider the content required to record a decent podcast. While you might be able to sound coherent for five minutes, try it for ten minutes. Putting together a logical and articulate episode is nearly impossible without a plan. Yes, you can delete much of the “junk” later but you’ll add considerable amounts of time to your workload.
Optimize for Search Engines.
If you’re seeking new listeners, they should be able to find your audio content easily. Using RSS feeds within a blog or independent RSS service is essential. Use the keywords that best describe your content in the podcast feed title and again in the description. Search engines can’t “hear” your podcast so it’s nearly impossible to know the content without a proper title and meta data. Many online podcast aggregators arrange audio by title, not by content. Make it as easy as possible for your podcast to be filed correctly.
Watch Your Bandwidth
Bandwidth is critical to the accessibility of your audio content. You’ll want to make sure you purchase a hosting account that can handle the higher loads produced by your podcast. If you create a lot of podcasts, look into reliable, dedicated hosting. Or, use a reliable web host that makes it easy for you to increase your bandwidth as needed — for a fair cost.
A “bandwidth exceeded” message from your host shows your listeners your unprofessionalism.
Knowing how to create web audio is only a single piece of a successful podcast. By using the tips above, you can be better prepared to make your podcasting events successful.
