Website Audio - Listen up for More Traffic

There's no doubt, web users are expecting more from websites. You must stand out. If you want to stand out, you need to start thinking beyond the norm. If everyone's doing it, everyone's the same. With the development of Web 2.0 technology and cheaper audio and video software, it's now cheap and easy to add sound and video to your site.

Website Audio - Listen up for More TrafficIn this article I focus on audio only. You have a number of choices when adding website audio. You could find an affiliate radio station and stream it to your website; or you could add a playlist of music you think visitors to your website will like; or you can create your own content.

The best, and most unique, way to catch visitors' attention is to create your own content. Start by exploring your competition. Are they adding interactive content? If so, how often do they update? Is the content informative or is it content disguised as a pitch?

If you want to get famous, or at least viral, focus on content for content's sake. Resist the tempation to sell. You need to establish credibility before you try to lead visitors into your sales cycle. Who wants to listen to commercials? Nobody. Don't make your content into a commercial. In general, the most popular audio content is humorous, informative, or contrarian.

How-to and information sharing is the safest starting point. Why safest? You have to get to know your audience before you can throw in humor or controversial advice. Warm up to your prospects first. Let them know what you know about your topic. Help first. Sell later.

If, for example, you sell car parts, you could do an audio series on car maintenance. Other alternatives would be a weekly round-up of Nascar news or an interview with a maintenance or racing celebrity.

Producing audio content today is not near as painful as it was just a few years ago. All you need is a computer, a good microphone and the right software. Even if you start with audio content initially, buy software which allows you to produce both audio and video content. You'll thank yourself once you graduate to video content.

Before you begin, make sure you have a high quality headset with noise cancelling microphone. Most major electronics stores stock headsets with microphones. Find a quiet place where you can record uninteruppted. No coffee shops-for obvious reasons.

Once you have all this in place, it's time to record. Don’t worry, there’s plenty room for trial and error. Plan audio piece in advance and rehearse a few times before you record. There's a lot of debate on whether you should write down and read your recording. I suggest writing it down to clarify any points and to help you better grasp the content. From your written notes, put together a small outline with main points. Then rehearse using just your outline. An outline will help you stay on track without making you sound like a robot.

To help spread the word, give listeners the option to add your content to social bookmarking sites like Digg and Reddit. Remember that consistently good content is better than one masterpiece. Provide solid information and your listeners will come back for more and pass you around.
