If you feel that you can create web content with enough quality and originality to catch the attention of web users, you should explore the possibility of using social networking and bookmarking websites as a marketing tool.
The power of buzz marketing in the Web 2.0 world allows even the smallest business the opportunity to make a huge impact.
Founded in 2005 by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, social news website Reddit offers several interesting marketing possibilities. In essence, Reddit users post links to content and other users then give the content an up or down vote. Enough up votes and the link rises to the Reddit home page while a lot of down votes will condemn the content to obscurity.
Users can also leave comments about links to content related to you on Reddit. Be aware of this and choose your content wisely. You run the risk of creating a negative buzz about your website or product every time you post content. However, if you are successful and your content reaches the Reddit homepage, you can reach thousands of eyeballs, and hopefully clicks. Estimates indicate that a spot on Reddit's homepage has the potential to drive 10,000 visitors to your website in one day.
Even though it's fine to submit your own content to Reddit, it's even better if you can get others to submit your content. Make content submissions easy. Add buttons on your content page allowing users to add you to Reddit as well as other social bookmarking sites.
However, having success on any social website requires excellent and interesting content as well as great execution. Believe it or not, not everything you produce is Reddit worthy. Instead of submitting everything you produce, brainstorm content ideas specifically for Reddit. Keep readers interested and eager for your next piece.
While Reddit has a main news and politics section, it also includes sections called "sub-reddits" for more specific areas such as science or technology. Make sure you place your content in the right sections. Don't be accused of being a spammer.
Like many social bookmarking websites, if you have success on Reddit, it's likely to be short lived. Many websites get their "15 minutes of fame" before dropping back into obscurity. However, this traffic can be valuable if you're using effective methods gain your visitors' trust. If you can't convert on your end, no amount of traffic will help you.Whether your first Reddit efforts are successful or not, you have to stay patient and persistent. If users genuinely like your content, they will more than likely vote positively for other content. Whatever content users like, give them more. Cut what they don't like.
