Everyone loves free, and one of the best ways to get people to buy your products is to offer them a teaser for free. And Web 2.0 offers many ways you can get your product samples out there, give a people a taste of your product and show them where they can buy the full version.
Obviously, this method isn't for everyone and is suited only to certain products. If, for example, you sell cars it wouldn't make much sense to offer people a free wheel as a teaser. However, if you sell online tutorials, eBooks, audio books, video content or software, this method works really well. In general, if your product can be downloaded, demos and teasers are an excellent means of promotion. You will also benefit from backlinks to your website which will help your standing with the search engines.
So, here are some tips on how to give potential customers a taste of what you offer and leave them wanting more.
Written Content
Starting with eBooks and e-courses, the general rule is to offer the first chapter of your book or the first lesson in your course. This works well. However, you may want to restructure it a little to create a cliff hanger effect. Basically, you want to leave your potential customer feeling like they are missing out if they do not finish the book or the course.
You will need to package your teaser excerpt as a PDF and put it out there on the web where people can find it. Check out www.scribd.com and www.freeiq.com. Here you can publish your content for free for all to see and provide links to your websites where people can buy the full product. Of course, you should also offer your teaser on your own websites.
Audio and Video
If you create audio or video content that you sell you can provide short teasers to encourage people to buy. This works on the same principle as written content. Normally, you should provide five to ten minutes of sample content. You can publish these in a number of places. Videos can go on video sharing websites like YouTube while FreeIQ also allows you to publish audio and video content. You could also submit your excerpts to torrents.
Software
If you write and sell software for a living you will need to give potential buyers a demo of some kind. You could offer a full version of your software for a trial period, or offer a version with limited features. You can submit these limited versions to software repositories to maximize exposure.
When you offer free content from your website you could ask the user to submit their email address. A good database of email addresses could be a valuable marketing tool in the future.
