Web 2.0 has recently emerged as a great way for online businesses to market online. In the most basic sense, Web 2.0 is open source content. So, in order to use open source content for your marketing, here are five things to keep in mind.
Play Fun
Because web 2.0 marketing is open source content, you have the ability to use any content that markets you best. But if you truly want to benefit from this kind of marketing you have to play fun. This means you can't waste your time by spamming, giving misleading information or placing misleading tags. Insincerity will get you exposed—for the wrong reasons—very quickly.
Take the Good with the Bad
Much like blogging, web 2.0 marketing opens you up for critics. While you may find many people agreeing with you, chances are there will be many critics and those who outright curse or condemn you. Instead of getting offended, take what these critics have to say and see if they have a point. You can't control how others respond but you can control how you respond. You never know when a critic will help you further your business.
After Testing, Determine if Its for You
After using web 2.0 media on a test run, you have to ask yourself if it still fits your marketing goals. Are you having trouble taking the good with the bad? Remember this is open source content giving anybody the right to say anything. So are you using this marketing strategy because it's the new thing—and everybody's doing it—or because you truly think you can benefit from it?
Market Without Marketing
You want to market your business without marketing. What this means is try to avoid blatant advertising or hype. Most people who have email have been inundated with spam, so they can spot overly hyped writing. You must build trust first. Trust takes time which is hard for many marketers to understand.
Work Hard
Most online marketers don't understand that it takes a lot of work to get your name out there to make sales. But it can and does happen. You have to be willing to build your reputation every day through various channels. Only then will you be able to reach and serve prospects.
Web 2.0 is certainly getting most of the hype in the press. If you're willing to change your mindset about effective marketing, you'll be able to have success with it and begin to generate far more traffic than before.
