It sometimes seems like blogs were created simply to carry Google Adsense ads. It seems like you cannot look at a website today without the obligatory Google Ads box hovering somewhere around the main content.
However, there have been some signs of threat, however faint, to Google's dominance of the blog advertising market. One interesting alternative that has been around for quite a while and has built up a significant following is Openads.
Openads describes itself as an ad-space community, and released a new version of their free, open source ad server software recently. While it remains in the shadow of giants like Google and Yahoo!, it already has in the region of 150,000 users worldwide.
Openads gives web publishers freedom to place ads on their website but choose what ads appear on their websites. It is highly configurable and even allows webmasters to choose which viewers see which ads. So certain ads can be targeted at visitors from certain locations, or certain ads can appear at certain times of the day.
Openads does not spurn the likes of Google and you can easily use it to run ads from Google Adsense, Tribal Fusion and similar programs. However, you have full control. You can turn ads on and off as you choose, you can change advertisers or you can run your own ads. It is all up to you.
While Google Adsense revolutionized the web, and the read write web opportunities presented by Web 2.0 have made publishing very easy, there is a distinct lack of control over advertising for many publishers. Openads addresses this issue and uses the same Web 2.0 technologies to allow publishers to target very specific audiences with advertisement so their choice.
One of the main disadvantages, however, is that there is a steep learning curve, even for the seasoned blogger. If you have difficulty getting Google Ads onto your site, then you will definitely find the going tough with Openads. However, it is worth the effort if you want to take advertising on your site to the next level.
Openads has its own set of concepts on how to make the best use of advertising space on websites and the parties involved. Concisely, this involves you the publisher; zones, or areas of your websites that are devoted to advertising; advertisers; ad campaigns; and banners.
Will Openads not only give you the tools to create your own advertising campaigns, but also will give help and advice on how to best succeed. In the second part of this article, we will look at other possible alternatives to Google Adsense.
