The social bookmarking and networking websites that are leading the Web 2.0 transformation are increasingly tapping into unique advertising opportunities.
While social bookmarking websites have been a lucrative hunting ground for internet marketers seeking to promote their products, they are now increasingly offering new advertising opportunities to local businesses.
StumbleUpon is one social media site that is offering this advertising opportunity to more businesses. So, how does StumbleUpon work? Users install a toolbar on their browser that gives them three options. They can '"stumble" a site, which takes them to a random website within a category the user interest category. Or, they can give a page an "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" ranking.
Clever marketers who have come up with good and interesting content have been successful in driving significant amount of traffic to their websites using StumbleUpon.
If enough people give a page the thumbs up, the more people will stumble on it.
While many people rely on the quality of their content to increase visits to their website via StumbleUpon, it's also possible to pay to make your website more popular. Paying is simple to set up. You will have to visit StumbleUpon and click the "ads" section to set up a campaign. Keep in mind that any StumbleUpon advertising campaign will be much more successful if your website contains interesting content.
You set up your campaign by specifically choosing the audience you want to target. You can target by category, location, age and gender. With over 500 categories to choose from, you can still reach a highly niched target audience.
Next, choose a maximum limit for the number of visitors you wish to receive each day. This can range from 100 to 3,000 at a cost of 5 cents per visitor.
While this represents a good number of visitors to for the price, make sure you're narrowing your audience as much as possible. For example, 'Computer Hardware', 'Video Games' and 'Multimedia' are all very general topics in the Computers category, so visitors may or may not be interested in the content or product.
Also, if the content is truly entertaining and visitors give it the thumbs up, there is the possibility that it could go viral. This can actually help you increase your visitors for no additional cost.
StumbleUpon also allows you to join communities that are related to your business. These communities, or groups, fall under many categories, including Commerce, Computers, Health, Hobbies and more. This gives you the opportunity to get yourself and your products in the minds of other members.
