Web 2.0 Marketing for the Home Business

Social websites, blogs, RSS feeds and other Web 2.0 technologies have become the new tool chest for the online marketer. But, Web 2.0 isn't only for the big guys. Web 2.0 provides excellent marketing opportunities for everyone, especially the home-based entrepreneur.

In this article I examine several ways Web 2.0 marketing can help you grow your home business, from start up to ongoing success.

Web 2.0 Marketing for the Home BusinessYou most likely have heard about the blogging phenomenon. This is perhaps the original Web 2.0 marketing tool.

Blogs differ from traditional websites in that they allow you to interact with customers on a more personal level.

Content can be more casual than standard website content. More importantly, it's easy. Publishing is instant and it's free if you don't count bandwidth and equipment.

In fact, if you don't have a website yet, don't bother. Get a blog. Blogger and TypePad both offer free and paid blogs. Start out small. Most blogging platforms will allow you to upgrade once you need more space and bandwidth.

The huge popularity of social media websites also offers unprecedented marketing opportunities for the home-based entrepreneur.

Sites like FaceBook, MySpace and Digg are now among the most visited in the world. And, again, they're free.

But, there's a catch. Spammers continue to hammer these sites hard. So, visitors are intensely pessimistic and unforgiving. To break out of the pile, you will have to produce excellent content. Speak to your audience. Be authentic. Then match your content to what people are interested in and might be looking for.

To make it easy for others to submit your content, you should have buttons for all the major social networking websites at the top and bottom of each of your content pages. Make it easy for readers to submit your content. If it's good, they will. Also, try to avoid using ads on your content pages. You don't want visitors to think you're only looking for traffic.

Don't discount the benefits of setting up your own RSS feed. RSS allows you to publish and distribute your content across multiple web channels. A user simply clicks on your button and has content and updates from your website delivered directly to their desktop.

These are just a few simple and inexpensive ways to make a great start into Web 2.0 marketing. Don't be afraid to experiment. Size doesn't matter online.
