How to Optimize Your Blog for Search Engines

Improving search engine rankings is a key goal for most bloggers. However, focusing on search rankings for the sake of rankings can seriously affect content output.

Optimize Your Blog for SearchBelow are tips on how to maintain high content quality and improve search rankings simultaneously.

The Significance of Keywords

Using relevant keywords in blog posts is the simplest and most commonly used technique for optimizing for search engine. Here's the problem with keyword optimization. If you're trying to fit a keyword into your blog post, you'll tend to over optimize. This is especially true if you don't have much subject knowledge.

To overcome the over optimization dilemma, others say the trick is to put keywords as close to the beginning of the text as possible. While good in theory, it also tends to miss the point of blogging, which is to provide quality content.

My take is to focus on the content. Search engines are coming down hard on webmasters who "keyword bomb" their websites.

The best way to optimize for keywords is to include them in your content (i.e. articles, news releases, reports) titles.

Getting Back Links

Back links are definitely the key to better search engine rankings. But, like content, they can be manipulated. Google has explicitly stated that quality backlinks must be earned. How do you earn backlinks? With content.

Search engines understand that webmasters can't control every link to their site. But what they do understand is that better content = better links. Trustworthy, established sites are more likely to link to content that is well written, contains useful information, and doesn't reek of self promotion.

That's why reciprocal links, directory links, and three way links are continually being devalued. Because anyone with a few dollars and a little time can get these links.

Once again, the key to great backlinks is great content.

Multimedia Content

One technique for getting better search results is through the use of video and audio. Once again, the content within these products is what drives the traffic which ultimately drives the search results.

Multimedia content on blogs is especially popular because of instant syndication. This syndication is what can light the viral effect on a piece of content.

While humor is a common method used to drive traffic, it must be relevant. In the end, it's not the amount of traffic you get, but how many conversions you get.
