The Silent Technology Gap

If you look around, you may suspect that most people have a reasonable level of technological knowledge. However, research has shown otherwise.

The Silent Technology GapThere are many people whose tech skills begin and end with starting a vehicle or turning on a stove. The reasons why are numerous but primarily include not having the financial means to buy a PC and a reluctance to learn about something completely unknown.

Determining if a technology gap exists is one question. But the more looming question is determining if this technology gap is a problem. Societies are moving quickly to invest in and upgrade their technology infrastructures. Governments are realizing that without the right technology, they won't be able to compete globally.

In 2002, 10 countries contributed 86% of the total research and development money spent that year. For the remaining countries to only have contributed 14% to the technology research pie speaks volumes about how big the technology gap really is.

However, this "digital divide" may be more multifaceted than first thought. For example, there's a difference between those who don't have internet access and those that do but choose not to use the internet.

One thing the technology gap doesn't address is the reverse — what is happening on a personal level as technologies allow people more digital connections? Is there an effect on communities that don't spend as much "face time" because technology is so readily available?

There will always be a debate as to whether technology has had a negative or positive impact on society. But, in order to establish a cause and effect relationship, multiple variables have to be isolated, which may be impossible.

Although studies show overwhelming evidence that a gap exists, the effects of a gap are much different for countries, cities, and individuals.

Addressing the technology gap in terms of its effects, both positive and negative, is the proper way to determine how technology best fits into society. Until that time, the conclusions will remain largely silent.
