Open Source Solutions – Bridging the Technology Gap

Imagine a situation where a highly educated computer programmer sits idle at a desk because his company can only afford software for one computer. Or think about a company that continues to lose highly trained IT personnel. Their reason for their leaving? They don't have access to the right hardware and software tools. These are prime examples of the technology gap that exists within companies.

Unfortunately, these two situations are all too common. Fortunately, open source applications are turning this situation around. Countries which once could not afford to create their own development infrastructures are getting the right tools and retaining their own personnel.

A company's success is no longer dependent solely on cost. With the aid of open source software, companies can focus on innovation and responding to rapidly changing customer needs.

Skilled Worker Retention

Companies who are not willing to invest in the latest worker technologies are in danger of losing top performers.

When companies fail to have an effective office technology strategy, workplace performance diminishes. That's when employees start looking for other jobs.

But companies can have an effective technology strategy that doesn't require significant capital expenditures—with open source tools. The key is to hire top level support, such as a CIO or CTO, who knows how to manage open source tools.

Having high level support allows you to invest in the right technologies. And, if you have the right office technology, why not leverage it in your human resources and recruitment strategies? Potential workers want to know that they're walking into an organization that is highly dedicated to technological developments.

Complete System Integration

The problem most companies have, especially smaller companies, is that they take a piecemeal strategy.

To leverage technology properly, a company must have the right software and the right hardware integrated properly. If you combine this with solid employee training, you have a recipe for success.

Workers want to know that a company will be able to keep up with technological advances without comprising worker productivity.

Ignoring the office technology gap isn't the right solution. Those entering the workforce today are much more technologically savvy than a generation ago. They grew up understanding technology as a normal part of life.

Companies who could not afford the latest software tools can now use open source software to create the right technological environment.

Those companies who are not willing to invest in the right workforce technologies risk losing their employees to organizations that are willing to make the investment.
