If you have more than one computer in your home, there are many benefits to setting up your own home network. Whether you hook up your computers with cables or wirelessly, a network will give you the power to share your internet connection, files, and peripherals.
If you have an internet connection, you will want share it with all the computers in your home. To make this happen, it's easiest to build a wireless network. You'll forgo to headaches of running cable throughout your house. And, you can add other computers, devices, or peripherals almost instantly.
Once you have your home network set up, you will find you can put it to use in many ways. You can share files between computers and even remotely access the other computers in your home using a terminal service.
You can also set it up so that peripherals are accessible from any computer in your home. The most commonly shared peripheral is the printer. So, even if your printer is in the sitting room and you are at a computer in your bedroom, you can still print. You can also share other peripherals such as DVD/CD burners, hard drives and web cams.
A home network is also ideal for gaming and other leisurely activities. You can play multi-player games with people in your home or online. You can now hook up more home appliances to the network such as gaming consoles and televisions. It's even possible to connect your satellite TV connection to your network and watch your favorite shows on your laptop or desktop anywhere in the home.
As mentioned earlier, wireless networks are becoming the standard. Any computer less than a couple of years old should have wireless capability. Also, most ISPs provide wireless routers as part of their home internet package. If not, you should be able to buy a good router for under $100. One router will easily provide a good signal throughout the entire home.
There are many advantages to wireless networks. Easy to setup. Scalable — you can add other computers and devices later. And they are fast becoming the "home management" system people use to interact with and make use of technology in the home.
