Technology Grant Writing – Keys to Success

Technology grant opportunities are harder to acquire as competition becomes intense. As organizations continue to compete globally, there is an increasing need to invest in the latest technological solutions.

Getting the right grant at the right time requires more than luck and fortune, it requires a willingness to adhere to strict standards. The following five guidelines can help you increase your chances of securing a grant.

1. Sustainability.Technology Grant Writing – Keys to Success

Funding sources want to know how you plan to sustain your program — without funding. It may seem counterintuitive but applying for a grant in desperation will only hurt your chances.

Remember, funding sources want to know that they will get a return on their investment. Showing desperation only shows that you are unwilling to invest your own resources into sustaining your programs.

By showing that you're committed to a plan, you're demonstrating a willingness to succeed — with or without the grant.

2. Promotion Power.

Be your own best promoter. Let the world know that you've been successful with your program. This doesn't have to be hard nor expensive. Distribute a newsletter. Blogging is an extremely cheap and effective means to distribute information — information that search engines love.

Promoting your program's success will let funding sources, and potential funding sources, know that you're excited about your program. Don't keep it to yourself. Get out and promote.

3. Collaborate for Success.

Collaboration means bringing in other organizations which can help you reach your goals faster.

This allows you more freedom to write in your grant what you want to accomplish. If you don't have the expertise in a certain area, bring in another organization or consultant.

Sharing in the results allow you to reach your goals quicker, serve other more effectively, and accomplish everything you intended to accomplish in your grant application.

4. Evaluate Strengths and Weaknesses.

Because of the competition, many organizations who receive grants only evaluate how well everything is running.

But, funding sources know there will be weaknesses. So, it's not a matter of having the weakness. It's a matter of recognizing what's not working and finding another solution.

By fixing deficiencies, you're adding to your strengths which will lead to outstanding results, which may lead to increased funding.

5. Mind Your Grammar.

Unfortunately, increased technological capability hasn't improved spelling and grammar. It's easy to overlook mistakes when you've read an application twenty or thirty times.

Designate someone as the proofreader. Don't let this person read the application until you've completed it to the best of your ability. They will spot up to 90% of the mistakes you didn't catch.

Check and double check everything. There's nothing worse than to submit an application filled with spelling and grammar errors.
