Grants for Technology – Getting it is Just the Beginning

Winning the grant writing contest is exhilarating. All the time and effort put into creating a strategic plan, collaborating, and finally writing and submitting the application has finally paid off.

Now what? When you are given grant money whether by a foundation, business, or government agency, you're obligated to spend the money wisely.

In fact, there's a valuable lesson in securing grant money.

With grant money, you are obligated to:

• Deliver your service within your specified time period
  
  
• Maintain high standards when delivering your service
  
  
• Evaluate, track, and report progress
  
  
• Spend the money in the manner is which you specified
  
  
• Ask for budget modifications beforehand
  
  
• Collaborate with integrity

Winning grant money is only the beginning.

Putting so much time and effort into the proposal can cause neglect in the actual implementation. Once you've secured the funding, you have to switch gears.

Now, it's time to put into practice what you've outlined in your plan. If you said you were going to bring in other organizations, now's the time to bring them in officially.

Now is also the time to put your team into place. Does everyone know their role? Is everyone ready to work towards the goals the grant money is funding?

Grant writing is a team effort. Grants can take your vision from dream to reality. Hopefully, during the planning process, you were able to get buy-in from your staff, an oversight committee, or a voluntary board of directors. They are now your cheerleaders.

Your team will carry out the tasks. Your buy-in becomes the encouragement you need to continue. This will allow you to get the work done while avoiding burnout.

Grant writing can be a long and grueling process. But it's only a means to another ends. All said and done, executing your plan and serving your cause will be your measuring stick. Executing correctly will open doors to future funding and build your credibility in the industry.
